About Agra


The city of Agra flourished under the patronage of the emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan and attracted artisans from Persia and central Asia. Agra is still famous for handicrafts products such as inlay work on marble, carpets, jewellery, zari and embroidery work. A few kilometres northwest of Agra lies Sikandra, Akbar's mausoleum.

Taj Mahal

A world-famous icon, the Taj Mahal is widely believed to be designed to represent an earthly replica of houses in paradise. This sublime garden tomb was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal who died in 1631. Built in perfect proportions and exquisite craftsmanship, the Taj Mahal has been described as a vision, a dream, a poem, a wonder.

Agra Fort

The imposing red sandstone Agra Fort set on the west bank of the Yamuna was built by emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573. Its ramparts form a crescent along the river front, and encompasses an enormous complex of courtly buildings, ranging in style from the early eclecticism of Akbar to the sublime elegance of Shah Jahan.

Fatehpur Sikri

Built by emperor Akbar in 1571 and 1585 in honor of Salim Chisti, a famous Sufi Saint of the Chisti order, Fatehpur Sikri was the Mughal capital for 14 years, after which the city was abandoned, many say because of lack of water.

Bharatpur

Bharatpur bird sanctuary or Keoladeo National Park as it is officially known,is a wonder of the natural world . Over 350 species of birds can be seen in this 29 square kilometer park, with a third of them being migrants, many of whom have made this park their wintering ground.
